Savannah adds energy saving cranes
The Georgia Ports Authority said it has added 11 new energy-efficient rubber-tired gantry cranes.
The port said the new cranes have a power management system that operates at variable speeds so the cranes burn an average of four gallons of diesel per-hour compared to six gallons on average in the existing fleet of 60 RTGs.
In the next few weeks, the GPA will test two-speed upgrades on its older RTGs with the goal of achieving a more efficient level of energy use and reducing air pollution.
