Savannah sets volume record, ready for peak season    Officials at the Port of Savannah set records for August with 166,864 TEUs of containerized cargo, up 8.1 percent over August 2004.
   There was also a sharp upturn in intermodal rail traffic, which increased 19.1 percent to 18,194 total lifts.
   'The Port of Savannah's record-setting volume for the month of August is a clear sign peak season has begun,' said Doug J. Marchand, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority.
Marchand said two new super post-Panamax cranes that arrived in Savannah in late June have been fully assembled, tested, and began moving cargo Sept. 25.
   'The new cranes have increased operational speed and load capacity as we continue to accommodate a growing volume of containerized cargo,' Marchand said.
