Schneider National unveils stackable intermodal container
Schneider National, a U.S. transportation and logistics company based in Green Bay, Wis., has introduced a new stackable intermodal container, designed by Schneider, Stoughton Trailers and the Wabash National, for use on any railroad.
The new container measures 53 feet long just over 100 inches in width, making it comparable in size to a standard van trailer. It can accommodate 25 pallets side by side with a potential for 10 to 15 percent more palletized cargo than standard intermodal containers.
With the same load configuration as a van trailer, the new unit may be double-stacked when used on railroads, and also 'allows easy conversion from over-the-road to rail,' said Brian Bowers, vice president and general manager of intermodal for Schneider National.
Schneider National has purchased 200 such units, which have been undergoing tests this fall. The company has plans for full deployment of the new container in its fleet during 2005.
