Some Indian ports having trouble meeting throughput targets

Some of India’s 12 major ports are having difficulty meeting throughput targets set out by the country’s shipping ministry, according to a report in the Economic Times.

The targets aren’t a problem for the country’s busiest ports, like Jawaharlal Nehru in Mumbai, Cochin or Chennai, but in older ports where cargo is drying up due to obsolete or insufficient port infrastructure. The targets are intended to be achievable since the ministry jointly sets them with officials at the various nationally run port trusts. But not all are measuring up.

“According to port sources, what makes the target figures difficult for some of the major ports, especially the older ones, is the reluctance of employees towards port reforms. It is a common sight in many successful ports that contract labor are being used to carry out the work while port employees sit and enjoy the benefits,” the newspaper reported.

The target deadline date is March 31, the end of the Indian government’s fiscal year.
