StateÆs largest biofuel refinery approved for Sacramento port location

Construction of California's largest biofuel refinery, 10 times larger than its closest rival, has been approved for a location at the Port of Sacramento.

Capable of producing 60 million gallons of diesel fuel a year from mainly imported vegetable oil, the proposed plant is slated to cost between $60 million and $90 million. The proposal from Primafuel Inc. of Long Beach was approved this week by the port's governing board, but must still pass required state and local environmental reviews. The review project has slowed the development of similar projects elsewhere in the state. Under the current proposal, the Sacramento plant would be completed by 2009.

The head of Primafuel cited the port's location to major transportation nodes as a main reason for pursuing the site.

Located about 70 miles due east of San Francisco, the Port of Sacramento is connected to the Pacific Ocean by an extensive series of man-made channels and natural waterways.
