TNT takes iPads to the skies

The integrator has received regulatory approval to use iPad Air tablets as electronic flight bags and will implement the program on Jan. 1.

TNT Airways has received approval from the Belgian Civil Aviation Authority to use iPad Air tablets as electronic flight bags and will start using the devices in its fleet of 50 planes on Jan. 1.
The carrier explained that using an iPad will allow it to go completely paperless, replacing the 110 pounds of paper that is carried by flight crews each time they take off.
According to a press release, TNT submitted to a six-month trial run, while the Belgian authorities looked into the safety of the new program. Currently, all of TNT’s 247 pilots have an iPad, and each plane’s cockpit has been outfitted with iPad housing. Remote-management software has been installed on the iPads to ensure compliance with company procedures.
“TNT Airways is one of the first commercial airlines in Europe to receive the authorization to deploy paperless cockpits,” Martin Sodergard, TNT’s managing director for network operations, stated.  “This testifies to TNT’s commitment to innovation and safety.”
