United Airlines’ cargo activity climbed 7.2 percent, year-over-year, in June, finishing the month at 202.264 million cargo revenue ton miles.
The carrier’s strong June puts it in second place among the top three domestic passenger carriers. Delta reported flying 207.637 million cargo ton miles in June, and American finished with 193.419 million miles. United, however, did experience the largest year-over-year increase in June, with Delta reporting 5.9-percent growth. American reported a 1.2-percent bump.
For the first six months of the year, United’s 6.2-percent growth rate means it finished the period with just more than 1.18 billion ton miles. American flew 1.15 billion miles in the period, up 9.1 percent, in the first six months of the year, and Delta flew a little more than 1.12 billion miles, which was down 0.9 percent from the same period last year.
United’s June performance follows May activity that was up 5.4 percent, year-over-year. April showed a 3.4-percent increase in cargo ton miles.
United’s growth comes as a new cargo head takes over from the recently departed Robbie Anderson, who had been at United since October 2010. Jan Krems, formerly Air France’s vice president of Americas for Air France, officially starts his job around the middle of July.
