Vessel stranded by Burma cyclone put into service

A Burmese ocean carrier is planning to operate a cargo service to China, Japan and South Korea using a salvaged Japanese vessel that was stranded by a cyclone last year.

Local media reported that engineers from Myanmar Five Star Lines were able to salvage the Cosmic Leader, formerly owned by the Japan-based Eastern Car Liner. The vessel was stranded on an island during the vicious storm, cyclone Nargis, which killed nearly 100,000 people in May 2008.

The vessel previously operated on a service between Japan, Southeast Asia and India.

According to a report by the Chinese news agency Xinhua, Myanmar has so far salvaged 32 vessels out of 40 sunk during the severe storm.
