Vinalines execs arrested

Vietnamese police have arrested more suspects as part of a widening scandal in the country’s shipping industry, according to a report Sunday by Agence France Presse.
The deputy director general of state-owned shipping giant Vinalines, 53-year-old Bui Quoc Anh, was detained on Friday for embezzlement, along with two others, including a state auditor, a company official told AFP.
Local media reports identified the third suspect as an executive at a subsidiary of Vinalines, which is the country’s biggest sea shipping group, operating a fleet of oil tankers, containerships and other vessels, the report said.
The arrests were based on investigations of a former executive at scandal-ridden shipbuilder Vinashin, who was jailed last month for intentionally violating state regulations.
State-owned newspaper Thanh Nien reported Sunday that the three new suspects allegedly embezzled tens of thousands of dollars while buying a containership.
Vinalines is the 87th largest container line in the world, according to maritime analyst Alphaliner, with a fleet of 10 vessels.
