The trucking and logistics company Werner Enterprises said it had profit for the third quarter ending Sept. 30 of $29.6 million, 22 percent more than the $24.2 million earned in the same 2010 period.
Revenue for the Omaha, Neb.-based company was $509.6 million in the third quarter, 10 percent more than the $463.3 million recorded in the same 2010 period.
“We continue to believe that generally favorable truckload freight trends are caused to a greater degree by supply side constraints limiting truckload capacity, as opposed to demand generated by economic activity,” the company said.
It said average revenues per total mile increased 3 percent in the third quarter 2011 compared to the 2010 third quarter.
“Contractual rate increases and a better freight mix were the principal reasons for the rate improvement,” it added.
Werner said it plans to keep its fleet size at about 7,300 trucks and is “continuing to strengthen and redesign our truckload freight network to optimize and maximize increasing freight opportunities without adding trucks.”
