Port Houston’s biggest international trade partners were China, Mexico and Brazil during the first half of the year.

The port’s Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals have been closed as the result of the hardware failure that began at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The port told customers the hardware failure wasn’t related to a cyberattack.

The company’s new facility in Grand Prairie follows the opening of new facilities in Atlanta and Port Houston, and an expansion in Laredo, Texas.

Container activity was 275,840 TEUs at the port in April, an increase of 25% year-over-year for the month of April.

“We have invested in the right infrastructure at the right time to handle growing cargo volumes and bigger ships,” says South Carolina Ports’ Jim Newsome.

Port Houston is positioning itself as a viable option for handling more containerized imports from Asia.

“Obviously everything with COVID is a learning curve,” says Tom Hughes.
