CSI begins in Colombia

U.S. Customs officers have begun assisting local authorities inspect outbound cargo at the Port of Cartagena in Colombia as part of the continuing expansion of the Container Security Initiative.

   U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Cartagena is the 53rd port to host U.S. teams that help identify high-risk cargo for inspection with non-intrusive machines prior to vessel loading. The program is designed to prevent the smuggling of a nuclear or radioactive weapon that can be used in an attack.

   The U.S. Energy Department is loaning the government of Colombia radiation portal monitors to assist with detection efforts.
